Отец Джозефа Долтона Гукера, сэр Уильям Джексон Гукер тоже был известным ботаником и иностранным членом-корреспондентом Петербургской Академии наук. Папины лекции в Университете Глазго мальчик начал слушать с семи лет. Молодого доктора медицины Гукера пригласили исполнить обязанности доктора в антарктической экспедиции Джеймса Росса. По пути в Антарктику и всюду, где возможно, Гукер собирал ботанические коллекции, а по возвращении издал сочинения: «Flora Antarctica», «Flora Novae Zelandiae» и «Flora Tasmanica». Чуть позже Гукер стал первым европейцем, который собирал растения в Гималаях. Итогом трехлетней экспедиции стала книга о флоре Индии. Потом он еще попутешествовал по Палестине, Марокко и Северной Америке и обогатил науку множеством фактов по флористике и массой новых растений. Тридцати лет выдающегося ботаника избрали членом Лондонского Королевского общества, а в 1873 году и его президентом . Гукер основал так называемый «Индекс Кью» – справочник всех известных видов семенных растений, который издается до наших дней.
